Professional background

Since retiring, Professor Dr Ulrich Walwei has continued working at a limited capacity as a researcher at the IAB. Professor Walwei is an honorary professor of labour market research at the University of Regensburg’s Institute of Economics and Econometrics.

Professor Walwei studied Economics and completed his doctorate in Law and Economics at the University of Paderborn (Dr. rer. pol.) where he worked as a research assistant to the Chair of Public Finance, Professor Dr Friedrich Buttler. Starting at the IAB in 1988, Professor Walwei has held various positions during his tenure, including Head of the “Growth, Demography and Labour Market” research unit. From 2002 to 2024, Professor Walwei served Vice Director of the IAB.

His research interests lie in the area of labour market institutions and regulations, in particular forms of employment, and the employment of older workers.

In addition, Professor Walwei is active in a number of advisory bodies. He is a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) and he is also an active council member at the Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg. In 2020, he was appointed to the World of Work Council established by the Federal Minister of Labour. The Council’s mandate ended in June 2024.
