Forced migration and the labour market: What tasks are we facing?

Abstract

"Forced migration is still the predominant topic of labour market policy. The trigger for this was the high rate of immigration of refugees to Germany in the second half of 2015. Now, step by step, the high numbers of refugees are becoming relevant to the labour market. At the present time, the question is whether, and how, the labour market can absorb this huge group of refugees with initially low levels of employability in both the short- and longterm. On the one hand, it is to be expected that the refugees have a great interest in earning a living, are very keen on gaining an education and are most willing to be integrated. However the serious disadvantages that refugees have vis-à-vis competition cannot be ignored Very often they simply do not have the necessary language skills, knowledge of in-company processes, or adequate experience of western industrial societies."
