Supporting junior researchers

Our graduate programme

The IAB graduate programme is first and foremost aimed at social science and economics graduates with above-average qualifications who are looking to research empirical and theoretical issues in labour market research in the form of a dissertation and/or who are interested in developing appropriate statistical/econometric methods.

Doctoral candidates working at IAB

Apart from the graduate programme, IAB also supports doctoral candidates working at the institute through measures such as:

  • Employment pursuant to the German Act on Temporary Employment in Higher Education (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG) for scientific qualification
  • Creation of synergies between work-related activities in the research department and the topic of the dissertation
  • Flexible working hours and the option of mobile work as well as support in working on the dissertation (by arrangement with the manager) (e.g. by granting a limited leave of absence)
  • Consulting on dissertation-related topics provided by division managers and senior researchers
  • IAB qualification (resilience training specially for doctoral candidates, summer schools, seminars, colloquium, learning hours, DiskAB, etc.)
  • Conference attendance both domestic and abroad
  • Research stays both domestic and abroad
  • Networking with external researchers at the institute (visiting researchers, research professors, research fellows)
  • Promotion of teaching assignments
  • Attendance at graduate programme events
  • Mentoring programme for women
  • Network gatherings for junior researchers
  • Interdisciplinary networking at the institute (e.g. through working groups and focus areas)
  • Support of the compatibility of doctorate and family
  • Career advice.

“forschprung” – the junior magazine of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB)

The “forschprung” magazine (in German) offers interesting and exciting insights into the varied daily routine of junior researchers at IAB.

Senior postdoctorate researchers

After successfully completing their doctorate, IAB offers researchers the following employment and development opportunities:

  • Employment pursuant to the German Act on Temporary Employment in Higher Education (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG) for further postdoctoral qualification
  • Option of employment extension for an indefinite period as part of a tenure track procedure
  • Categorisation as activity level I in the BA collective agreement as soon as a relevant doctoral thesis or at least two relevant publications with author credit have been published in one of the referred peer-reviewed journals
  • Support of qualification to teach at university (habilitation) through flexible working hours, mobile work, and the creation of synergies between work-related activities in the research department and the topic of the habilitation
  • Requirement-oriented qualifications
  • Conference attendance both domestic and abroad
  • Research stays both domestic and abroad
  • Networking with external researchers at the institute (visiting researchers, research professors, research fellows)
  • Promotion of teaching assignments
  • Interdisciplinary networking at the institute (e.g. through working groups and focus areas)
  • Career advice
  • Development opportunities e.g. as a junior professor, researcher with distinction, head of a working group, project manager, deputy division manager, Quality Representative, Ombudsperson for Good Scientific Practice, or as part of a dual employment scheme with a university
  • Support of the compatibility of excellent scientific work and family.

Administrative work

We also offer development opportunities for employees in science-related fields:

  • Options of employment extension for an indefinite period: specific tenure track procedures and development opportunities, work as a specialist in research departments, qualified work with development options in the business fields
  • Chain of salary development in addition to career opportunities regulated by collective bargaining agreements

  • Support of further training outside of the main job
  • Participation in the mentoring programme for female subject matter experts and specialists

Our mentoring programme

The IAB mentoring programme is designed to help female researchers and subject matter experts develop their careers at the institute.

The Dual Career Netzwerk Nordbayern (Northern Bavarian Dual Career Network)

The Institute for Employment Research has partnered with the Dual Career Netzwerk Nordbayern (DCNN) to support dual-career couples with the objective of facilitating a family-friendly personnel policy.
