Stable yet unequal: a decade of work-life balance in Germany (2026)

Abstract
"Societal shifts, digitalization, and flexibilization at the workplace have led to blurred boundaries between life and work, yet the overall development of work-life balance (WLB) over the past decade in the German population remains largely unexplored. This study leverages longitudinal quantitative data from the PASS panel, collected via telephone surveys by the Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research (IAB) in Germany. Using Latent Growth Modeling, we analyzed the WLB trajectories of 1,806 German employees over a decade (2013–2022). Thus, unlike many cross-sectional studies, this research captures the long-term evolution of WLB, illuminating how it has responded to significant societal and workplace changes. Despite these changes, our findings indicate that WLB has remained generally stable over the past ten years. By incorporating person- and job-related factors (gender, parental status, career stage, job category, income group), we were also able to examine individual differences in WLB and its progression. Blue-collar workers and participants with children showed significantly lower WLB. White-collar workers were the only subgroup to show a slight decrease in WLB. These results highlight the importance of targeted interventions at both organizational and policy levels to address disparities in WLB and promote sustainable work environments." Abstract
(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

Is working from home changing the meaning of work? (2026)

Abstract
"Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home (WFH) has become a common practice in the workplace. This raises the question of whether WFH changes the non-monetary benefits of work, such as job quality or social contacts. Thus, in this article, we investigate how working from home affects Jahoda’s latent functions of employment as well as job quality measures. To this end, we use panel data from the German Panel Study Labour Market and Social Security (PASS) and estimate the effects of changing work patterns on the aforementioned outcomes. Our findings reveal basically no effects of WFH on job quality measures and latent benefits. This, in contrast to anecdotal evidence, implies that WFH does not harm psychological well-being." Abstract
"While research on income inequality and institutional trust mainly focuses on how actual changes in inequality and individuals’ perceptions affect trust, we know little about whether changes in wages relate to institutional trust. This study investigates how institutional trust develops across wage groups over time and whether substantial wage increases are associated with changes in institutional trust. Using data from the Panel Labour Market and Social Security (PASS), we show that wage inequality decreased in Germany between 2019 and 2023. While wage levels are positively associated with trust, decreases in wage inequality do not translate into increases in trust among low-wage workers. To the contrary, whose wages increased by approximately 20% over our observation period, show a decline in institutional trust. Fixed-effects regressions reveal a statistically significant, but only weak, association between wages and institutional trust. Overall, our findings suggest that even substantial wage increases, such as those from minimum wage reforms, may not strengthen institutional trust, highlighting the limits of economic interventions in shaping citizens’ perceptions of government." Abstract
"This study examines the impact of job vacancy information obtained through personal contacts on monetary and nonmonetary job search outcomes. We hypothesise that the effects will be positive for both kinds of outcome, and that these effects may depend on employment status prior to finding a new job. Additionally, we hypothesise that information from professional personal contacts will lead to better job search outcomes than information from private personal contacts. We use panel data from the German Panel Study "Labour Market and Social Security" (PASS) and fixed effects regressions to test these hypotheses. Monetary outcomes are measured by wages and nonmonetary outcomes by job satisfaction. Overall, we find that the employed tend to benefit more than the unemployed. However, the specific pattern differs depending on whether vacancy information stems from personal or professional contacts and on the type of outcome (monetary or nonmonetary)." Abstract
(Autorenreferat, IAB-Doku)

Abstract
"We examine how welfare benefit receipt influences the transition from school into all forms of professional training, including vocational training and higher education. We use a unique data set that combines panel survey data with detailed administrative records of adolescents in Germany and develop a dynamic multiple imputation method to account for missing data. We find that adolescents in welfare dependent households show more fragmented transition patterns than others after leaving school. They are significantly less likely to enter professional training even after controlling for a rich set of individual and household related factors, including school type and grades. A key driver of this training gap is the school type, while school grades play no role. Our results imply a long-lasting impact of early socioeconomic conditions on later labor market transitions." Gender differences in job seekers’ access, activation, and returns to social capital (2026)

Abstract
"Persistent gender inequalities in labor markets are often attributed to gendered differences in social capital and the use of social networks during job search. This study examines gender disparities in social capital among job seekers using eighteen waves of the German Panel Study Labour Market and Social Security (PASS) and a novel causal decomposition approach (Yu & Elwert 2025). We distinguish between access to social capital (available network resources), activation (received job search resources), and returns (outcomes such as wages, job satisfaction, and job interviews). While women in the general population have more limited access to weak ties and high-status contacts, these differences narrow substantially among active job seekers. Consistent with this pattern, women and men receive similar levels of network-based job search support. Crucially, we find no evidence of a gender-specific returns deficit in wages or job satisfaction and only limited evidence for job interviews. Overall, the findings suggest that gender inequalities in job search outcomes are not primarily driven by differential access to, activation of, or returns from social capital." Abstract
The Role of Physical Activity in the Unemployment-Health Relationship - Evidence Based on German Panel Data (2026)

Abstract
"Studies have documented adverse effects of unemployment on various health outcomes, yet it remains an open question whether these effects are causally related to changes in health-related behavior. We focus on physical activity as a potential mediator and whether changes in physical activity can explain how unemployment impairs health. Competing theoretical perspectives suggest that unemployment may either restrict or increase physical activity. We use thirteen waves of the German panel study "Labor Market and Social Security" (N_it = 57,124; N_i = 13,123) as well as fixed-effects models in combination with mediation analysis techniques. Based on time-distributed fixed effects models, we assess temporal dynamics. We find a negative total effect of unemployment on self-rated health (β = -0.063; p < 0.01). At the same time, unemployment increases physical activity (β = 0.173; p < 0.001) and physical activity positively affects health (β = 0.046; p < 0.001). We also find a positive indirect effect (IE= 0.008; p < 0.001) that partly counterbalances the negative unemployment effect—implying that the effect is 13 percent stronger net of physical activity. The indirect effects hold for all phases of unemployment. Physical activity suppresses part of the health deterioration associated with unemployment. The temporal effect patterns suggest that increased available time, rather than stress relief, explains the rise in physical activity." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))

Abstract
"This paper outlines two studies on education bias in German probability-based surveys. Study 1 reviews data from 67 surveys across 19 survey programs conducted in Germany from 2000 to 2023. We found a consistent underrepresentation of individuals with a low level of formal education. We also found that the transition to self-administered modes due to rising survey costs may exacerbate this bias in the future. In study 2, we use the results of a workshop with experts on probability-based surveys, to discuss various strategies to deal with this bias, including increased face-to-face contacts and incentives, while emphasizing the need for research on adapting survey designs. Our findings underscore the urgency for further research to understand the nonparticipation mechanisms among less educated individuals and develop effective countermeasures. We advocate for collaborative efforts among survey researchers, cross-country comparative research, and consideration of potential trade-offs with other data quality dimensions." Abstract
"Research has long highlighted the role of social capital for labor market outcomes, but gendered processes received surprisingly little attention. Employing representative German survey data, we analyze differences in job search via social networks. Contrary to expectations, we find that women report using social networks more often at the extensive margin compared to men, but men are more likely utilize networks in ways requiring more effort, such as being introduced to employers. Thus, we highlight the importance of investigating social networks in detail to understand the role of social networks for generating or sustaining gender inequalities in the labor market." Abstract
"This study investigates everyday practices that households utilize to improve or maintain their livelihoods. Drawing on prior qualitative research across various European economies, we developed a new survey tool, which was deployed within a larger survey encompassing the entire economic spectrum of German households. Using explorative factor analysis, we identified four overarching livelihood strategies employed by households: budget management, subsistence production, the liquidation of household assets, and the parsimonious procurement of essentials. Our results indicate a differential prevalence of these strategies, with a notable frequency among low-income households, although they are not exclusive to this group. The study reveals that both objective economic factors, such as income and material deprivation, and assessments of a household’s past economic downturn and pessimistic future economic expectations influence the likelihood of adopting these livelihood strategies. However, certain indicators are more strongly predictive of specific strategies, such as parsimonious procurement of essentials is associated with lower household income and material deprivation while liquidation of household assets is closely associated with experiences of economic downturns."
