Effects of the Covid Crisis on Labour Supply in Germany

Beschreibung

"We establish novel substantial negative effects of the COVIDcrisis on labour supply in a continental European country. In Germany, despite the demographic ageing trend, the supply of labour has been growing for many years. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, this labour supply has been decreasing. First, because immigration has virtually come to a standstill since March 2020. Second, because individuals withdrew from the labour market in the period from March to September 2020. Applying a decomposition model, which allows disentangling demographic ageing, migration and behavioural trends on the change of labour supply, the negative effect of withdrawals is estimated to be almost one percent of the labour force."
