"Remittances are expected to provide a significant development contribution to recipient countries, although such an expectation has not yet been fully grounded on sound empirical evidence. This paper revises the recent experience of Ecuador in this respect, a country that recorded a massive wave of emigration in the late 1990s and early 2000s and an ensuing surge in remittances inflow, to draw some insights about the remittances-development nexus. The main finding is that remittances can foster development, although the economic roots of the underlying migration process and some relevant domestic policies can heavily influence and mediate their actual impact."
