"This chapter develops a tentative typology of resilient households based on the resources applied, practices implemented and cultural backgrounds contributing to improve their livelihoods under conditions of poverty, and their respective clusterings into types. Affected by unemployment or precarious employment, most resilient households employ alternative strategies, often based on special skills about nature, manual work or agriculture. High social commitment and integration in social networks are as important as a value orientation focussing on mutual support and exchange. Also the ability to adopt to new circumstances and to accept a high workload appears to be crucial for many resilient households. According to the specific mix of these practices, five types of resilient households are developed: the self-reliant oikos; the small entrepreneur-bricoleur; an active enforcement of citizens’ rights type; a type with strong relations to a community; and another with a strong healing trajectory. Across all types, a sufficient but different availability of various common goods seems to be crucial for resilience, according to type." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
