Professional background

Basha Vicari is a senior researcher in the department “Education, Training, and Employment over the Life Course” and head of the project group “National Educational Panel Study (NEPS): Adult Education and Lifelong Learning”. She studied social sciences at the Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) of Erlangen-Nuremberg as well as at the Comenius University of Bratislava, Slovakia. After her graduation, she worked as a teaching assistant at the Chair of Sociology and Empirical Social Research of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg from 2009 through 2012. In 2012, she joined the research group “Occupational Labor Markets” at the IAB. From 2010 to 2015, she was a scholarship holder of the joint Graduate Program (GradAB) of the IAB and the School of Business and Economics of the FAU. She completed her doctorate in 2017 with a PhD-thesis “On the influence of occupations for job changes”. Since the end of 2018, she has been a board member of the "Research Initiative for Occupations and Social Inequality (FiBus)".

Her research interests include analytical-empirical sociology of labor markets and occupational research. In particular, she is concerned with the measurement of labor market structuring characteristics of occupations and their influence on occupational mobility, skills and occupational mismatches and occupational gender segregation, as well as their impact on social inequality. In addition, specific topics of survey methodology and data collection by using survey experiments (vignette studies) also belong to her research area.
