Choice of profession as a career cul-de-sac? : differing chances of advancement in men's and women's occupations

Abstract

"Choice of profession is still characterised by stereotypes: care work and pre-school education still lie in the realms of women while the technical and processing professions are carried out by men. That has consequences for later careers as the so-called male professions often offer better chances of promotion. However the implication that women should be increasingly guided towards men's profession falls too short. For even men who decide in favour of a woman's profession have better chances of promotion. Researchers talk about a 'woman's profession' when the share of women is over 70 per cent and a "man's profession" when the share of men is over 70 per cent." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku)
