Professional background

Michael Oberfichtner has been head of the research department “Establishments and Employment” at IAB and professor for employment research at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg since April 2023. Previously, he worked as senior researcher in the department “Active Labour Market Policies and Integration”. He joined IAB in 2015. From 2011 to 2017, he worked as a researcher at the Chair of Labour and Regional Economics at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, where he completed his PhD (Dr. rer. pol.) in 2015. During his dissertation, he held a scholarship of the Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics and visited University of Warwick.

His current research focuses on imperfect competition in labour markets, on understanding gender differences in employment outcomes, and on field experiments to evaluate labour market policies.

Michael Oberfichtner is research fellow of IZA, associate of the interdisciplinary research network LASER and member of the Standing Field Committees for Social Policy and for Population Economics of the Verein für Socialpolitik.
