Establishments and Employment (BB)

Research Department

Tasks

The research projects of the department are based on the IAB Establishment Panel Study which was initiated in 1993 as a large stratified random sample of all establishments in Germany in all industries and of all different sizes on the basis of the employment statistics register of the Federal Employment Agency. This database enables us to add detailed employee characteristics to the Establishment Panel for the purposes of further research.

In addition, the unit carries out special surveys in selected branches of industry along with case studies. Research focuses mainly on the demand side of the labour market, especially the following factors: the influence of technological and organizational changes on patterns of employment and employment trends; in-company training and further training; skill requirements; enterprise flexibility; industrial relations; wage policies; productivity; and, innovation research. Our results are not only of interest to researchers, analysts and policymakers but to the business community as well.
