Functions at the IAB

Professional background

Mariella Falkenhain studied political science and Romance philology at Freie Universität Berlin and Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris) and received her doctoral degree from the Hertie School of Governance. 

She has worked at the IAB (research unit Joblessness and Social Inclusion) since December 2017. She worked as a Research Associate at the Hertie School of Governance and the Institut für Europäische Politik.

Mariella Falkenhain is a member of the German Sociological Association (DGS), of the steering committee “Immigration, Immigrants and Labour Markets in Europe“ (IMISCOE) and of the scientific advisory board of the Horizon Europe project “Global Strategy for Skills, Migration, and Development“ at Radboud University.

Her research interests include (un)employment and poverty in the context of labour migration and forced migration, reform of employment services and qualitative methods. Mariella Falkenhain regularly advises ministries, associations and other organisations on these topics. Since October 2022, she has headed the qualitative research project “Forced migrants from Ukraine on their way into the German labour society”. 

 

 

 

Activities
