The importance of diversity at IAB
IAB values diversity not only because it is dictated by law, such as the General Act on Equal Treatment (Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz, AGG), but above all because it is an integral part of the institute’s own business and personnel policy as well as a key success factor. This means:
- We make use of the resources of our diverse workforce. The diversity of our society is reflected in the IAB employees.
- We create a holistic working environment. That includes flexible, inclusive working conditions and labour relations, good guidance, and collaboration. Diversity and inclusion are key pillars of our talent management.
- We are expressly opposed to any kind of discrimination. At IAB we work proactively to create an environment where people of any origin and nationality, any age, any religion or world view, and any sexual orientation and identity will feel welcome.
A video in the IAB YouTube channel shows how our colleagues experience diversity in their everyday routine.
Inclusion
We are actively advocating for inclusion and create an accessible working environment though the following:
- Accessible workstations
- Positive action (preferred hiring of candidates with severe disabilities in case of equal qualification)
- Job ads specifically aimed at people with severe disabilities (e.g. research assistants, student assistants, scholarships)
We create the best possible – and, above all, accessible – jobs through individually optimised workstations and means of work. Working hours and the form of work are customised to fit our employees’ individual needs. Moreover, our Spokesperson for People with Severe Disabilities and the IAB Inclusion Representative provide support in case of problems, legal questions, or other matters.
During the application procedure, we exclusively assess any measurable qualifications, experience, and the soft skills required for the respective activity. No other personal characteristics are considered. Applicants with severe disabilities are hired preferably in case of equal qualification. We also regularly advertise jobs, e.g. for students or researchers, which are specifically aimed at people with certain restrictions.
Age
People of varying age and from different generations working together is considered to be a valuable source of competence at IAB.
We actively support employees of any age and the retention of long-standing knowledge at the institute by means of the following:
- Specific qualification measures
- Purposeful collaboration of experienced and junior colleagues
- Transfer of knowledge.
Internationality and interculturalism
It is not only due to its international orientation that IAB benefits from the varied competences, experience, and perspectives of its employees of various origins.
We support our employees and we live internationalisation by means of the following:
- International recruitment
- Active promotion of German and English language proficiency
- Membership in the Dual Career Netzwerk Nordbayern
- Training of intercultural competence
- Facilitation of international research stays
- Attendance at international conferences.
