The Labour Market and Mobility
In Germany, around 60 per cent of all employees subject to social insurance contributions commute between their home and their place of work. The country has approximately 20.6 million commuters in total. Within the European Union, millions of people make use of the EU right to freedom of movement in order to work in another member state. And then there is international migration, which plays a significant role in offsetting demographic change and the related shortage not only of skilled workers but also of labour in general.
The mobility of workers within Germany and beyond its borders is therefore an important focus of the IAB’s research. We have compiled a list of IAB publications and projects on a dedicated page that are related to the subject of the labour market and mobility.
