The coronavirus spread worldwide in early 2020. The pandemic accelerated processes, such as the digitalisation of work, but it also intensified pre-existing challenges, such as the shortage of skilled workers or the inequalities in education and labour market opportunities. The German labour market proved to be altogether robust. The next crisis followed in February 2022 when Russia attacked Ukraine. Already existing global supply chain bottlenecks worsened and rising energy and commodity prices posed new challenges for the economy and the labour market.
The IAB responds to these crisis-related developments and provides rapidly available research data and scientific findings on the consequences of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The research projects are based in part on existing administrative and survey data, in part on extensions of ongoing surveys, and in part on employee and establishment surveys launched specifically for this purpose.
The findings will help to better understand the impact of the crises on the labour market and the effects of governmental measures. This will generate new research results and make an important contribution to policy advice.
