Abstract

Data for East Germans from social security notifications and internal procedures of the Federal Employment Agency are only available from 1992 onwards. This lack of information for the key transition years 1989 to 1991 is an important limitation for current research. The aim of the project is to close the gap in the data by linking the “Integrated Employment Biographies” of the IAB with the “Data Fund of Societal Work Power” of the German Federal Archive from 1989. The new linked data permits the examination of phenomena such as unemployment, job and occupational mobility, as well as regional mobility. The long-term goal is to make the new data set available to the research community via the Research Data Centre of the Federal Employment Agency.
