Abstract

As part of SUARE I, a random sample of approximately 2,500 Ukrainian households was surveyed between 2023 and 2025 – the Longitudinal Study of Ukrainian Refugees (SUARE) – and integrated into the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Refugee Survey (IAB-BAMF-SOEP), which has been running since 2016, and the main survey of the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP-CORE). The follow-up project SUARE II aims to expand and secure this data infrastructure through further survey waves in 2026–2028. It enables a panel analysis representative of the refugee population in Germany, allowing differentiated comparisons with other migrant groups and the native population – and closes a key data gap in German integration monitoring. SUARE II builds on SUARE I in terms of content and methodology and serves as the empirical basis for two complementary research projects. This project examines how the specific framework conditions affect migration decisions, human capital investments, family strategies and actual mobility of Ukrainian refugees – and what role meso- and macrostructural factors play for medium- and long-term integration.
