Julian Balling

Professional background
Since April 2026, Julian Balling has been a researcher in the unit "Migration and International Labour Studies" (INTER) of the IAB.
He studied Economics at the Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität Munich (B.Sc.) as well as at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (M.Sc.). During his Master's studies, he also worked as a teaching assistant for economics and quantitative methods. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in Sociology at the University of Bamberg.
His research focuses on the project SUARE II, examining institutional frameworks and family decisions in the integration process of Ukrainian refugees. Specifically, his research interests include family-related migration decisions and labour market integration, intentions to stay or return, family reunification, as well as career trajectories, partnership formation, and social integration following displacement. Additionally, he is interested in research questions related to economics of education.
