No dough, no show? : young people's access to leisure activities
Abstract
"Citizens in social welfare states claim equal access to opportunities in life. The public discourse on poverty and educational opportunities focuses on leisure time activities as one dimension of social participation. Using data from the 'Labour Market and Social Security' (PASS) panel, this articles examines the relationship between young people's social position and life chances. The analysis is based on Simmel's considerations of poverty in terms of dependency. As a result poor young people experience more limited access to those leisure time activities providing demanded capabilities. The decisive factor is their cultural capital."
