Abstract

The German economy is in good shape with regard to a growing economy, falling unemployment and rising wages. By contrast, the proportion of Germans who believe that society is deteriorating is increasing. This is due to increased immigration, but also to the impression that inequality and segregation are increasing in Germany, house prices are exploding and there are more so-called "no-go areas" in the cities. The individual choice of place of residence reinforces social segregation. In Germany, such a separation by ethnic origin, class or level of qualification has led to political concerns, as it is a catalyst for social inequality. One indicator of increased segregation is the decoupling of house prices within and between cities. The objective of this project is to analyze mobility decisions of workers and how these may contribute to accelerated social segregation. An extensive analysis of the development of segregation within and between cities marks the starting point.
