IAB Job Vacancy Survey 2018 : Employers spend less on filling fixed-term positions

Abstract

"In 2018, 38 per cent of the 3.87 million new hires were carried out based on a fixed-term contract. The article examines establishment and position-specific determinants of fixed-term contracts and provides insights into the recruitment practices for new hires differentiated by contract type. Among other things, we examine differences in recruitment durations as well as differences in recruitment expenses between fixed-term and open-ended contracts in order to assess the relevance of different motives of employers to conclude fixed-term contracts."
