The free movement of labour: New opportunities are not used to their fullest

Abstract

"The free movement of labour is a fundamental right for citizens of European Union member states. Since the 1st of May, this right also applies for citizens from eight middle and eastern European countries which joined the European Union in 2004. Within this short report, we analyse the effects of the opening-up of labour markets on immigration and employment. Furthermore, we discuss the implications on the recruitment strategies of firms in Germany. The IAB Job Vacancy Survey shows that firms know the new legal framework but don't consider the new possibilities to be important for the filling of open positions by now."
