What is the current labormarket situation in the profession of geographer and in related discipline activities

Abstract

"The current demand for skilled labor in the profession geographer and in many related professions is high; however, the labor market prospects differ significantly. For geographers, the rate of fixed-term contracts is relatively high and salaries are low. In traditional geographical occupational fields (e.g. planning), the employment situation is very similar; however, the prospects in related technical activities (e.g. geoinformatics) in management consultancy and in management and executive positions are considerably more favorable. As geographers switch more frequently between different professional fields, they often have to acquire new job-specific knowledge in the course of their career, despite their interdisciplinary orientation. Digital skills (e.g. spatial data science), which can be used in a wide range of activities, offer an option for mastering such challenges in the course of a career."
