Situative and habitual defensivness: sketch of a conceptional proposal for determining the relationship between defensivness and coping

Abstract

"Beginning with a theoretical finding - the lack of clarity in the relationship between defensiveness and coping - as well as with an empirical finding - the non-identity of situative and habitual defensiveness - this contribution presents a conceptual proposal in the form of a heuristic framework of analysis, within which the phenomena to be examined can be suitably situated and can, in this way, be made operable. A differentiation is made between defensiveness in the actuality of a given situation and defensiveness that has become a habitual characteristic of a personality. The agency of communication in both areas are the evaluation processes of coping, within which on the one hand it is decided which defensive measures are mobilized in a given instance, and on the other, which newly emerging forms of defensiveness are routinized and ultimately habitualized. In this way, both areas of defensive behaviour of an individual can be registered in its own respective logic and at the same time defined within its concrete circumstances."
