A real shortage only in certain professions : objective data and answers from the Institute for Employment Research
Abstract
"The topic 'lack of skilled workers' is currently being discussed in a heated manner in Germany. Although there is no lack of suggestions of how to solve the problem, there is often a lack of reliable statistical information. The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) provides objective data and answers on this topic, based on is regular surveys and research.<br> Conclusions: There is a relevant lack of skilled professionals mainly in the engineering and IT professions, where the situation has been strained since 2006, as well as currently in some social professions - especially pre-school teachers, and those caring for the old and the ill. Here a shortage of skilled staff will continue to be a topic. In other professions one can at present only talk of a bottleneck which is a transient phenomenon at times of an economic upturn. In the longer term however, greater efforts on the part of all actors on the labour market will be necessary to mobilize available potential inherent in neglected target groups on the labour market, in education and further training, and in immigration."
