Abstract

"The influx of refugees can rejuvenate the aging population of Germany. This article presents a population projection, where refugees are taken into account by integrating a separate refugee module. By doing this, the impact of the possible magnitude and structure of immigrants on the population development can be analysed. Despite a total influx of roughly 2.26 million people seeking temporary protection from 2015 to 2020, the population will reach its current level again in 2035. While the mediumterm increase in the population will stimulate the demand for occupations in the public sector and construction related occupations, the age and qualification structure of the refugees indicates that there are qualification potentials, which need to be tapped to integrate the refugees into the labour market."
