Enormous differences

Abstract

"At the beginning of 2015 and on behalf of the Commissioner for Care Services of the Federal Government, the Institute for Employment Research presented a study which examined the average gross salaries of nurses and carers for the elderly. This was differentiated according to the Federal State, in-house classification levels and care institutions. The focus was on the gross employee wages of nurses and carers for the elderly in the year 2013, which the employers reported to the social insurances companies (including wage supplements). What are listed are in each case the middle values of the salaries (median earnings), that is, those amounts where an equal number of employees earn more or less than these salaries. Overall the study shows very large variations in earnings amongst the nursing and caring professions and, within the same profession, considerable regional differences between east and west Germany, but also among Federal States and individual care institutions. In addition to this, a uniform picture of salaries does not materialise in relation to the general level of wages of skilled staff and auxiliary staff or other similar occupational groups in the 16 Federal States."
