Migration and the work of the future

Abstract

In order to answer the question of what role migration will play in the world of work and in society in the future, the author begins by developing ten theses. He observes that, without immigration, the labour force potential in Germany will drop by a good third by the year 2050. Immigration can considerably lessen the problems of financing the social state that are linked to demographic change. The long-term effects of immigration on the finances of the public budgets and social insurance depend on the qualifications and vocational integration of future immigrants and their descendants. In the following section and against this background, the author makes demands on migration and integration policy: it should support the immigration of qualified workers, strengthen employment placement across state boundaries, promote the language competence of immigrants, and make it easier for educational qualifications to be recognized.
