Training opportunities for young people with non-German nationality in middle-sized and large companies : a sequence analysis at the level of the establishment

Abstract

"Young people with a migration background have a relatively difficult time in Germany when trying to find a training position in an establishment after leaving school. Partly this is a result of the lack of school, social or cultural competence; often however discrimination cannot be ruled out as the explanation. Empirical studies examine this topic mainly via the young people as persons looking for training and analyse their experiences with transition over the first threshold. A small number of the studies lay the focus on the behaviour of employers and/or the establishments providing training and attempt here to differentiate discriminating selection criteria from organisational selection criteria. Frequently, however, findings relating to discrimination are more a question of interpretation than that causal reasoning takes place.<br> By way of a sequence analysis at the level of the establishment, this contribution pursues the question of to what extent middle-sized and large establishments engaging in training were open for foreign trainees over a period of 13 years and/or opened or closed themselves to such persons. The empirical basis of this evaluation is the Employee History File of the Institute for Employment Research" (Text excerpt, IAB-Doku)
