On the independence of the health and social sector from the economic situation

Abstract

"The economic crisis of the years 2008 and 2009 had harmed the German labour market much less than had been feared. Along with the use of measures to secure employment such as short-time work and the mutual efforts on the part of many enterprises and workforces to retain workers, employment also remained stable because there were sectors which were hardly dependent upon macroeconomic demand. Such a sector is the health and social services sector. The extent to which this branch is dependent upon economic cycles is investigated below and compared to the economy as a whole and the manufacturing industry, an economic sector which is strongly driven by the economy."
