Newman┐s modularity concept as an instrument for the comparison of demarcations of economic areas and for the identification of the optimal number of economic areas.
Abstract
"The demarcation of functional labour market or economic areas is of great importance to the analysis of economic processes and for obtaining valid regional statistics, and therefore also for decision-making in labour market and economic policy. The article at hand demonstrates how the quality of different regional demarcations based on Newman's Modularity concept can be evaluated. In concluding, it is shown how Newman's Modularity concept can be applied to identify an optimal number of economic areas. It is found that the Modularity concept suits both purposes very well and it is a reliable measure of quality for the evaluation of demarcations." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku)
