Network Research: Blind on One Eye? A Comment on the Role of Networks in Recruitment Processes

Abstract

"The empirical literature on the relevance of social networks in the labour market is mostly preoccupied with the perspective of employment-seeking persons; employers are rarely focussed on. To date, there is no representative study for Germany on the relevance of networks from the perspective of companies trying to fill vacancies. This blank spot in research is to be (partly) filled by the analyses presented in this paper. We use nationally representative data from the IAB survey of job supply. These show which companies use network information to fill vacancies, which vacancies are filled this way and which advantages are derived from the use of social networks. While we proceed 'blind on one eye' ourselves insofar as we only illustrate the companies' perspective, we regard our investigation as a first step towards analyses that include all relevant agents."
