Women between work and family: Potentials for the labour market

Abstract

"If women want to re-enter the labour market after a family-related absence, the German Federal Employment Agency (BA) could support them. But not all of them register with the responsible employment agency; many remain in the hidden reserve. This report presents results of a comparison of those two groups and gives advice how to support the registered women better and how to regain those in the hidden reserve for the labour market. Data from year 2008 show: women in the hidden reserve are older, more often married and mostly live in West Germany compared to women who are registered with the agency. The majority within both groups obtained a vocational education degree. One third does not have such a degree. For them additional training could facilitate labour market re-entry."
