Persistent occupational gender segregation: In East and West Germany, women and men work mainly in different occupations

Abstract

"This report analyses the occupational gender segregation of employees in West and East Germany between 2012 and 2019. We find high levels of occupational gender segregation in both parts of Germany. With a slight decrease in East Germany, the level of occupational segregation has converged with that of West Germany over the period analyzed. At the same time, there are different patterns of segregation in East and West Germany: In East Germany, for example, women in particular are highly segregated, while in West Germany men are more likely to be employed in gender-typical occupations."
