Poverty among elementary school children. Perspectives and pedagogical practice of teachers and pedagogical staff in child day care

Abstract

"In Germany, around three million minors are currently affected by poverty. Reducing child poverty remains a priority social policy goal. It is hoped that the expansion of education and childcare services, and in particular cooperation between schools and daycare centers, will help to prevent poverty in the long term. The results of two interview studies conducted at Munich elementary schools and day care centers show that, as a result of immigration and the Covid-19 pandemic, educators and teachers experience child poverty as a growing problem and see it as a mandate for action. They are hardly able to implement it, not only, but also because of the widespread staff shortage. Instead, they concentrate on their respective core tasks and on the “emergencies” among the students who are affected by poverty." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
