The effects of refugee migration on firms and incumbent workers
Project duration: 12.01.2024 to 31.12.2026
Abstract
How did the large refugee inflow from 2014-2016 affect the German labor market? Using individual-level administrative panel data on the German workforce, I first study the dynamic effects of predominantly low and medium-skilled immigration on native workers. Second, using a panel survey of firms, I want to look at their responses to the refugee arrivals, especially in light of their firm-specific skill shortages, and test whether refugee migration helped alleviate labor shortages or increased the low-wage sector.
