Abstract

People who commute to work in Germany from abroad are a small but growing group of employees in this country. Until 2011, they mainly came from Western Europe. Today, however, they mostly come from Eastern Europe. These so-called cross-border commuters differ significantly in terms of the professions they practice and the level of demands of their work. Since they often work in shortage occupations, they are an important resource for the German labor market.
