Why women earn more than men: Explaining the regional differences in the Gender Pay Gap
Project duration: 01.12.2016 to 30.06.2019
Abstract
The wage differential between women and men varies profoundly between the single regions within Germany. Overall, women earned 15 per cent less than men in the year 2015. In the district of Dingolfing-Landau, the gender pay gap reached 40 per cent, whereas in the city of Frankfurt/Oder, women earned 20 per cent more than men. This implies that gender-specific wage differentials not only depend on individual or socio-demographic characteristics, but also on factors specific to the single regions. So far, the regional differences have been considered in the literature only rudimentary. Hence, this project puts specific focus on the spatial disparities of the gender pay gap and their determinants.
