Project

Naturalization intentions of immigrants and refugees in Germany

Project duration: 30.11.2021 to 30.11.2023

Abstract

Acquiring citizenship is a powerful symbol of immigrants' involvement in the receiving country' society. Although immigrants and the host country can benefit from naturalization in many ways, the naturalization rate in Germany is comparatively low. Using an experimental vignette design applied to the IAB-SOEP Migration Sample and the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees, this project investigates whether to what extent the institutional framework of the naturalization process structures the naturalization intentions of different groups of immigrants in Germany.
