Incidence and determinants of unregistered work among refugees and other migrant groups.
Project duration: 01.06.2022 to 31.12.2024
Abstract
In this project, we aim to investigate the phenomenon of non-registered (irregular) work among refugees in Germany. To overcome the problem of measuring undeclared work, we conduct a "double-listing experiment" in the 2020 wave of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Refugee Panel. This experimental method, also known as the item-count technique, was developed to ensure a high degree of anonymity and thereby obtain truthful answers to sensitive questions that reveal inappropriate behavior or illegal activities and are associated with shame and social desirability (Droitcour et al., 1991; Kuklinski et al., 1997). The list experiment is therefore uniquely suited to address the difficult methodological challenge that arises when studying the sensitive topic of non-registered work in a vulnerable group such as refugees. Because unregistered work is illegal and refugees are aware of this fact and the likely consequences, controlling for misreporting is particularly important when studying this politically important group.
