Gender differences in the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on working individuals

Project duration: 31.05.2020 to 30.12.2021

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the everyday working lives of men and women differently. We investigate how these changes influenced gender-specific subjective well-being and which new working conditions (e.g. system relevance, increase or decrease in working volume, working remotely) played a special role in this. We focus in particular on working parents who, in addition to the changed working conditions, were additionally burdened by school and childcare closures, as they had to reconcile homeschooling and childcare with their work simultaneously. For our analyses, we use data from a COVID-19 supplementary web survey of the National Education Panel Study (NEPS) from May/June 2020 as well as previous waves of different Starting Cohorts of the NEPS to establish comparisons to pre-pandemic values.
