Olaf Hübler studied economics at the Free University of Berlin graduating in 1970 with a degree in economics (Diploma). He received his doctoral degree at the Technical University of Berlin in 1974 (Promotion) and completed his post-doctoral qualification in 1978 (Habilitation). Between 1982 and 1999 he was Professor of Econometrics and Statistics at the University of Hannover. Subsequently he held the position of Professor of Empirical Economics and Econometrics at the Leibniz University Hannover until 2011, when he retired.

Professor Hübler was appointed an IAB Research Fellow in 2005.

His research interests focus on applied econometrics and labour economics (with a particular interest in microeconometrics); gender-specific wage differentials; profit sharing; enterprise-level pacts and the evaluation of business and policy programmes.

Olaf Hübler has published the results of his research in various major journals, such as Advances in Statistical Analysis, Economics & Human Biology, Economics Letters, the German Economic Review, the Journal for Labour Market Research, Kyklos, the Scottish Journal of Political Economy, Statistical Papers, The World Economy and the Journal for Labour Market Research.
