Inclusion in the world of work

People with disabilities continue to face many barriers, especially when it comes to the labour market. In the world of work, inclusion is much more widely defined than simply workplace accessibility. The Bundestag has voted in favour of the German government’s bill aimed at fostering an inclusive labour market. The aim of the proposed legislation is to integrate more people with disabilities into the regular labour market and thus enable them to participate more freely in society. In any case, companies also benefit when people with disabilities and health problems can take part in working life on an equal, independent footing, because workplace inclusion and diversity open up new opportunities for businesses too.

What is the labour market situation for people with disabilities? What are the consequences of having a disability on someone’s future working life? How can people with disabilities take part in working life on an equal, independent footing? And how can companies become more inclusive? How can the integration of people with a mental illness be improved? What changes were there in terms of vocational rehabilitation during the COVID-19 pandemic? The IAB’s research focuses on these and other questions regarding inclusion in the world of work. We have compiled a list of IAB publications and projects on this page that are related to this topic.
