The issue is a familiar one: due to demographic change, many more older people are leaving the workforce than younger ones are joining it. Germany is set to lose several million workers over the coming decades unless countermeasures are taken to stem the outflow of labour. One option is to keep older people in their jobs for longer.
The proportion of older people in the job market and the proportion of older people in employment in Germany are higher than average compared with other European countries. Nonetheless, older people are still the group most affected by unemployment and their prospects of finding a new job have not improved in the last ten years. Older candidates remain at a disadvantage compared with younger ones in this respect.
So what is to be done? What needs to happen so that older people can in fact remain in employment and want to do so? How can a longer working life be achieved in such a manner as to avoid social hardship? The IAB’s research focuses on these and other questions regarding older people and the labour market. We have compiled a list of our relevant publications and projects on this page.
