Drivers working for app-based delivery services have become an integral part of the urban landscape in Germany. At the same time, working conditions in the so-called platform economy are keenly debated in the public discourse. For the first time, the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) examines the growth and structure of this form of employment, as well as the individual characteristics of dependant employees at ten large app-based delivery services in Germany. Almost half of the workers analysed are marginally employed and their income is lower than in comparable low-skilled occupations.
