The IAB’s and FAU’s joint graduate programme GradAB is inviting young researchers to its 18th interdisciplinary PhD workshop “Perspectives on (Un-)Employment”.
This event brings together qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research from the disciplines of economics, sociology as well as statistics and data science. It provides an opportunity for junior researchers to present their ongoing work in the field of theoretical and empirical labor market research, and to receive feedback from leading scholars in the field.
The workshop will focus on, but not be limited to the following subfields:
- Education, Qualification, and Social Mobility
- Inequality and Poverty, Gender, Migration, and Health
- Wages, Firms, and the Workplace
- Labor Market Institutions and Policies
- International Trade, Globalization, and Regional Labor Markets
- Technological Change and Artificial Intelligence
- Climate Change and its Impact on Labor Markets
- Survey Statistics, Survey Methodology and Computational Social Science

Submission
We welcome applications from the disciplines of economics, sociology as well as statistics and data science. Interested PhD students may submit an extended abstract (max. 1,500 words excl. references) alongside three to five keywords to IAB.PHD-WORKSHOP @iab.de. Please use the following file naming convention: ‘lastname_firstname_abstract’.pdf.
The submission should also include a short CV (max. 1 page), your contact information as well as an indication of whether you prefer to present a paper or a poster at the workshop.
The deadline for submission is 31 August 2026 (CEST).
Notifications of acceptance will be sent out before 31 October 2026.

We are committed to making this workshop accessible. The venue is step-free and has wheelchair accessible toilets. We will inquire about your further accessibility, dietary, and other requirements after acceptance.
Subject to demand, we aim at providing childcare during workshop hours to support participation of attendees with caring responsibilities. If you would like to make use of this provision, please indicate your childcare needs in your submission so that we can make necessary arrangements.
Furthermore, we can provide a limited number of travel grants. In case you wish to receive a travel grant, please indicate so in your submission and add proof that your institution does not cover travel costs. We will provide further information on the grant upon your notification of acceptance.
Indications of accessibility needs, childcare needs or an interest in receiving a travel grant will not affect decisions of acceptance for the workshop.
