Holland/Leinhardt (1976): Local Structure in Social Networks

Abstract

"The 70ies of the 20th century belong to the forming phase of network research where research groups from different disciplines and various universities got together. An important contribution was the work on triad statistics and statistical modelling of social networks that was done by Paul W. Holland, Samuel Leinhardt and James A. Davis in the 1970ies and at the beginning of the 1980ies, and whose models have even been adopted in the network literature as DHL models. Following his doctorate at Harvard University, Davis worked at the University of Chicago where Leinhardt became one of his students (Davis and Leinhardt 1967), before the latter continued his career at Carnegie Mellon University. Holland graduated from Stanford University in 1966 and taught at the University of Michigan and Harvard University before he moved to the Educational Testing Services (ETS) in 1975."
