Abstract

"This book provides an introduction into the instruments available for analyzing social structures. In doing so it orientates itself on transdisciplinary network analysis which can be defined by four elements: a structural perspective; the use of systematically collected empirical data on relationships; graphic processes; and mathematical models. In particular, the possibilities of examining interindividual relationship structures, the identification of partial groups ('cliques' and so on), of positions and roles, as well as the testing of structural hypotheses are presented. All analyses as based on a unified set of data and have been carried out using freely available software. Through this, the reader gains a fundamental understanding of the use of network analysis and his or her own experience in applying it. The coursebook is aimed at those teaching and studying advanced courses in empirical social research as well as empirically orientated structural-theoretical sociology."
