Occupational research for modern occupational training : status and perspectives

Abstract

"The occupational landscape is constantly on the move. While new occupations arise, old ones disappear or change in respect to their duties and requirements. It is the task of occupational research to accompany and analyse theses changes, anticipating future changes and indicating how occupational training and further training should be organized. At the same time, occupational research must take a look at the transitions from the educational to the employment system, study the usefulness of certain occupational qualifications, and find an explanation for structural change. In this respect, occupational research constitutes a field of research to which various disciplines supply approaches, methods and interpretations that may complement each other. However these opportunities are seldom appreciated: the situation in which occupational research finds itself is characterized more by discontinuity and fragmentation than by interdisciplinary activity and networking. This current volume brings the various different strands of research together and offers perspectives for future research on occupations, together with their place in the educational and employments systems."
