Shift work and weekend work in the focus of company management of working hours : cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses from the IAB establishment panel 1993 - 1996, taking particular account of the manufacturing industry.
Abstract
"In the IAB establishment panel of 1993 and 1996 information is collected concerning the decision to use certain forms of working hours and the intensity of their use. This includes questions regarding shift work and weekend work, which are the key forms of decoupling working time and operating hours. By observing the same enterprises over the course of time, the IAB establishment panel makes it possible to distinguish changes in company behaviour from inflows and outflows. This then makes it possible to demonstrate the dynamics that may possibly lie behind the balanced stock figures for the enterprises remaining in the panel. At company level a considerable exchange movement can be seen of companies taking up and ceasing to use the forms of working hours being examined here. A clear trend towards greater distribution can not be determined, as many enterprises, in particular small- and medium-sized enterprises, left the circle of those using shift and weekend between 1993 and 1996. As regards the employees, in most of the enterprises concerned the number of staff involved changed considerably over the course of time. Here, too, one can not speak on the whole of a constant upward movement, for whereas many enterprises increase their use of such forms of working hours, others reduce it."
